Rosh Hashanah in Uman: Celebration and Security in 2024

Traditionally, every year thousands of Hasidic pilgrims from around the world travel to the city of Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. In 2024, the celebration will take place from October 2 to October 4, and it is expected that the number of visitors will exceed 50,000 people. The central event of the pilgrimage is visiting the grave of Rabbi Nachman, a prominent spiritual leader. It is believed that prayers at this site help achieve forgiveness and spiritual renewal. Pilgrims will mark the year 5785 since the creation of the world.

👮‍♀️Security and Order Organization

Ensuring safety during the celebration this year takes on special importance. According to the National Police, both Ukrainian and Israeli law enforcement will be monitoring the situation. Due to the state of war, details regarding the number of security personnel involved have not been disclosed. In addition, the Hasidim have independently installed extra loudspeakers and alarms to quickly alert pilgrims of any potential danger. Special signs have also been placed to direct people to the nearest shelters in case of air raids. The curfew in Uman will remain in effect from midnight to 4 a.m.

🐎Mounted Police: New Measure for Situation Control

One of the innovations this year will be the deployment of mounted police to patrol the streets during the celebrations. This decision was made to enhance control over safety in crowded areas and ensure a rapid response to unforeseen situations.

✨Uman’s Preparations for the Celebration

Uman is actively preparing to welcome guests. As of September 27, the city has already received around five thousand pilgrims, and their numbers are growing daily. The director of the charitable fund "Historical and Cultural Center of the City of Uman," Iryna Rybnytska, emphasized that the city is ready for the celebration and is happy to welcome visitors from all over the world. Pilgrims like Elen from Israel come to Uman every year. She notes that for her, Rosh Hashanah is a time of joy and spiritual renewal. "It is a great joy to be here, to pray near Rabbi Nachman, and to ask for forgiveness for our sins. He makes us happy," Elen remarked.

🕎Rosh Hashanah Traditions: Shofar and the Symbolism of the Holiday

Rosh Hashanah is not only the beginning of the new year for Jews but also a time of deep repentance and prayer. One of the main traditions of the holiday is the blowing of the shofar — a ram's horn, which calls people to spiritual purification and symbolizes a willingness to sacrifice, recalling the story of Isaac. The annual pilgrimage to Ukraine for Rosh Hashanah holds immense spiritual significance for Hasidim. For many, it is not just a holiday but an opportunity to feel a deep connection with their spiritual traditions and history.

Recommendations for Pilgrims

Due to the current security situation in Ukraine, pilgrims are advised to obtain an insurance ukraine policy that covers not only regular risks but also those related to military actions, including protection against radiation. Such a policy can be obtained through the Welcome Ukraine platform.

May this year’s Rosh Hashanah celebration be safe and filled with joy for the entire Jewish community. We wish everyone peace, health, happiness, and prosperity.
