Entering Ukraine by Car: Features of the Berehove – Kyiv Route
Traveling through Ukraine by car is an exciting experience that allows you to see the country's diversity with your own eyes. It is also a necessity, as due to the war, air travel is unavailable, train tickets sell out quickly, leaving only buses or cars as options. The advantages of traveling by car include the freedom to act at your discretion. For instance, stopping to take a few photos of sunflowers against the sky or the Ukrainian Carpathians, resting, or staying overnight at a place you like.
The route from Berehove, a city near the Hungarian border, to the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, is popular among Europeans and Ukrainians. The road passes through picturesque landscapes and varies at each stage. Let's consider the practical aspects of the journey, the features of the route, and stops where you can rest and refuel. The route from Berehove to Kyiv runs through several main roads and cities. The total distance is 800 km, which takes at least 10-11 hours of driving.

- 📌Berehove — Mukachevo (M-24)
The distance between Berehove and Mukachevo is about 30 km. The road passes through the picturesque landscapes of Transcarpathia. It is a narrow road of average quality with light traffic. There are a few small gas stations near Berehove, larger ones are on the Mukachevo ring road (Okko, UPG).
- 📌Mukachevo — Lviv (M-06)
The road from Mukachevo to Lviv is part of the international highway M-06 (E50). It allows for fast movement, as it mostly consists of dual carriageway sections. Along the way, there are several stops with shops, cafes, and gas stations. This section offers a wide selection of comfortable hotels to suit any taste, such as in Polyana, Svaliava, Slavske, and Lviv. There are almost no gas stations in the mountains. Many stations are near the entrance and exit to Lviv.
- 📌Lviv — Rivne (M-06)
Continuing along the M-06, you head to Rivne through Brody and Dubno. This part of the road is not the best, so you need to be especially careful. There are gas stations, but not too many (for example, Socar near Rivne). A convenient place for an overnight stay is the Ivanhoe Hotel, located in a green area 5 km from the center of Rivne and 3 km from the M6 "Kyiv-Chop" highway.
- 📌Rivne — Zhytomyr (M-06)
Continuing along the M-06, you head towards Zhytomyr. This part of the road is known for its quality roads and beautiful forested areas. There are also plenty of places to rest and eat. Note the section of the Zhytomyr ring road where repairs are being carried out, so traffic is reduced to one lane. You should drive carefully. Very comfortable gas stations are immediately after Zhytomyr (Socar, WOG, UPG).
- 📌Zhytomyr — Kyiv (M-06)
The final section to Kyiv is a well-developed road with several bypass routes around populated areas. The road quality here is high, making for a very comfortable drive. This is one of the busiest highways, especially closer to Kyiv. There are many lanes and heavy traffic, especially during rush hours. There are many gas stations and places to stop.

During the trip, it is important to remember the curfew in Ukraine, which is currently in effect from 00:00 to 05:00. You should also download the 'Air Alarm' app to monitor air raid signals and have a map of shelters. It's better to get insurance coverage that includes war risks (for example, at https://welcomeukraine.today).
But most importantly, enjoy the moment and the charming Ukrainian landscapes. Have a safe and pleasant journey!
