Traveling to Ukraine for Citizens of the Czech Republic: Important Information and Tips
If you are a citizen of the Czech Republic and plan to visit Ukraine: Vítejte na Ukrajině! 🤩
But before your trip, you must read this information:
-
Visa Matters 🧐
Ukraine has abolished the visa requirement for citizens of the Czech Republic without a time limit. This measure allows entry and stay in Ukraine without a visa for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. In case of staying for the purpose of employment, permanent residence, family reunification, education, or a stay of more than 90 days, you need to apply for the corresponding visa. We recommend that citizens of the Czech Republic, when crossing the borders of Ukraine, request Ukrainian border authorities to stamp their passports with the date of entry into Ukraine, as there is no need to register with the relevant Ukrainian authorities for a stay of up to 90 days.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the Ukrainian side allows foreigners to travel between the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea and the rest of Ukraine only through designated checkpoints based on special permission. If a foreigner attempts to cross these checkpoints without the mentioned special permission, they may face both criminal and financial liability. Foreigners are strictly prohibited from entering Crimea by any other means except through the designated checkpoints. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also draws attention to the non-standard military-political situation and possible difficulties in providing assistance to Czech citizens in need in Crimea. For detailed information on entry and exit rules from the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, you can visit the website of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Kyiv.
- Passport 📕
Make sure your passport is valid and will remain valid for at least another 6 months after the planned departure date from Ukraine.
- Medical Insurance 👨⚕️
You need to have medical insurance that guarantees adequate coverage during your trip to Ukraine. As there is currently a war initiated by Russia on the territory of Ukraine, obtain an insurance policy that also covers military risks. In addition, there is an option to add protection against radiation. A convenient option is available here https://welcomeukraine.today/.
- Safety and Consular Advice 🔰
Before your departure, familiarize yourself with the latest consular advice and warnings for Ukraine on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
- Transportation Matters 🚚
Since aviation connections with Ukraine are currently unavailable, it is advisable to arrange transportation in advance. The best option is by bus. At present, there is a fairly extensive bus connection between Ukraine and the Czech Republic. It is also possible to travel by rail through Warsaw, Przemyśl, Chełm, Vienna, and Budapest. Crossing the border by car is not excluded.
-
Currency 💸
Czech crowns (not accepted at all exchange points), euros, and US dollars can be exchanged for Ukrainian hryvnias (the official currency of Ukraine) at banks and exchange offices. Additionally, it is worth noting that debit and credit cards can be used in most major cities.
-
Language 🌍
Ukrainian is the official language, but many people also understand English, especially in tourist regions.
-
Cultural Specifics 👨👩👧
Familiarize yourself with the cultural specifics and customs of Ukraine to show respect to the local population.
-
Safety 💪
Be sure to follow safety rules due to the ongoing military conflict. In particular, find out the curfew schedule in the region where you plan to stay and avoid being outdoors during this period. Also, install an app on your smartphone to receive air raid warnings and always act in accordance with them, as well as if you hear sirens on the street.
In addition, it is important to find an interactive map of shelters and protective structures in the city you plan to visit.
Despite all the challenges associated with the conflict, Ukraine remains a hospitable country where you can meet open-minded people and learn a lot of new things, as well as contribute to the support of the local population.
