Buky Canyon: Geological Wonder and Place of Power in Cherkasy Region

The rocky walls of the canyon are composed of Proterozoic granites, which form the basis of the Ukrainian Crystalline Shield. The age of these rocks is estimated to be approximately 2 billion years, with some granite formations reaching even 3.2 billion years, making them among the oldest geological structures on the planet. The canyon itself formed over millions of years. It began as a narrow fissure that was deepened and polished during the advance of ancient glaciers, which left huge boulders in their wake. Subsequently, the Hirs'ky Tikych River cut its permanent course through these massive granite blocks, creating a modern, rocky relief atypical of the steppe zone.
Geographical Description and Landscape Features The canyon stretches for approximately 2.5–5 kilometres, with an average width of about 80 metres. Its main feature is the steep, rocky banks, formed by outcrops of grey granite, reaching heights of about 30 metres. The Hirs'ky Tikych River here has a stony bed, causing a swift current uncharacteristic of lowland rivers, creating the impression of a mountain stream. The fairy-tale appearance of the canyon is enhanced by the Vyr waterfall, located near the dam of the former HPP. One of the most famous rocks is Rodionov's Rock, named after the prominent Ukrainian petrographer. Some rocks, for example, resemble a human profile, which gave rise to the legend of Kozak Lysak.

In the late 1920s, the Buky Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) was built here, near the start of the canyon—one of the first in Ukraine as part of the GOELRO plan. Although the HPP ceased operations in the late 1960s, its remains still attract attention and attest to the region's industrial past. The area is steeped in numerous legends. One of the most popular stories is associated with the Cossack-Kharkaternyky (Cossack sorcerers) who, according to belief, used these rocks and the turbulent river to perform their rites and unique trials for candidates. Locals also speak of the mystical power of the granite rocks and the spirits that supposedly inhabit the canyon. Given its exceptional natural and historical significance, Buky Canyon was granted the status of a state complex natural monument of local importance in 1975.
Tourism and Active Recreation Opportunities Today, Buky Canyon is one of the most popular recreational areas, attracting nature lovers and active vacationers. The granite cliffs with their diverse ledges have become an excellent site for rock climbing, with routes of varying difficulty established here. The Hirs'ky Tikych River is ideal for water tourism. In spring, during floods, its flow is strong enough for organizing kayak and canoe trips, offering unique views from the canyon floor.
