The Big Four. Where do Ukrainians find it most challenging to obtain visas and how to increase chances 🧐

During the war, many countries began accepting Ukrainian refugees without any visa requirements. However, as before, visas are often required for travel purposes such as business trips or visiting relatives.

Which countries have the toughest visa requirements?

It's important not to confuse refugee programs with other types of visas. Ukrainians need visas to enter the UK for tourism, business trips, etc. Consulates require a multitude of documents when applying for a visa, including income statements and other proofs of financial means. The UK is part of the so-called 'Big Four' countries where obtaining entry permission is most challenging. Besides the UK, this list includes Australia, Canada, and the USA.

Factors influencing visa denials for the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia:

  1. Working unofficially or being unemployed;
  2. Earning minimum wage (may be seen as insufficient funds for the trip);
  3. Not providing various income sources (as proof of means of support apart from minimum wage);
  4. Incorrectly filled out application, omissions, or errors;
  5. Failing to clearly explain the purpose of the trip and provide evidence of its specific goals.
  6. Consulates understand that air tickets alone can cost a third of your official salary if, for instance, you earn a hypothetical thousand euros per year. From my practice, a well-prepared visa application significantly increases the chances of approval.

How to increase your chances of getting a visa?

Alongside filling out the application and confirming your employment in Ukraine, the most important visa requirement is documentation proving sufficient funds for the trip.

These are likely the critical documents, as they primarily determine visa decisions. By the way, sometimes a woman doesn't work but her husband has a high official income. Thus, a woman can obtain a visa even if she is unemployed but has declared the family's total income.

How to assess visa chances based on your income?

Before applying for a visa, evaluate your chances and calculate the trip's budget. It should correlate with the income you declare in the application.

For example, if you plan a week-long trip to London costing around 1000 euros, add 200 euros for flights and another 100 euros per day for various expenses. In total, such expenses would amount to about 2000 euros. If you earn no more than 200 euros and show no other income sources, the visa center may deem this inadequate. However, you may still get a visa if you can demonstrate having these two thousand euros. You can even declare that you sold a flat or have a deposit in the bank, various bonds, and stocks.

Advice for US visas. Sometimes a person has no official job. Then, attach a letter and screenshots from your personal card, or find another way to prove that you have side income.

You can also ask someone in the US organizing your visit to write a sponsorship letter. In any situation, adjustments are possible, assures the expert.

If you were refused a visa, will you get it on the second attempt?

When applying for any visas, especially to the UK, Canada, the USA, and Australia, the rule applies: 'Measure seven times, cut once.' Usually, if there has been a visa refusal, getting it the second time is more difficult.

Of course, there's always a chance of getting a visa, and don't despair if you were denied. With careful application completion and adherence to rules, it should work out.
